International Day of Peace with The Body Shop

By 13:58 ,

It was an early celebration of International Day of Peace with The Body Shop yesterday. The United Nations declared International Day of Peace on 21st September and is dedicated to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples. The theme this year is Right of People to Peace.

In conjunction with International Day of Peace, The Body Shop Malaysia joins in the celebration by actively promoting messages of peace. Fellow NGO partners, activists, members of the media and several local celebrities as well as employees gathered to participate in planting Pinwheels of Peace.

These pinwheels with special messages on peace were planted around the Crystal Fountain in front of Pavilion KL. Members of the public too were encouraged to write their very own message for peace which were later hung in the Pavilion KL store. Why pinwheels? A pinwheel is a childhood symbol, it reminds us of a time when things were simple, joyful and peaceful. The spinning of the pinwheel in the wind will spread good thoughts and feeling about peace throughout the country and eventually the world.

In a world of war and conflict, we believe that violence is not the answer. What more, Malaysians are turning to violence and using  the extreme unrest in Gaza as platform to wage war against organisations and corporations causing innocent employees to be in fear and bear the consequences.

Violent conflicts in what we call civilised world still rage on have have not be resolved time after time. It is often unclear who the victors are but it is very clear that the losers are innocent victims, who sometimes are so far removed from the conflict, that sadly have to suffer.

"Anita Roddick, the founder of The Body Shop once said, 'If you think you are too small to be effective, you have never been in bed with a mosquito.' Business like ours have a responsibility to make a difference," shares Datin Mina Cheah-Foong, Managing Director of The Body Shop Malaysia.

This International Day of Peace we want to encourage peace activism in every single individual whom we can engage with: out customers, our Facebook and Twitter followers, our colleagues, our business partners, our NGO partners, the media, children at school, political figures, and influencers at large. We must remind ourselves and educate children about the value of peace.

In line with the theme of world peace, the Young Choral Academy was invited to perform a medley of songs during the event. Besides that, joining in the event were the children from ELC International School as we believe nurturing our young is important. Through this campaign, we hope to spread this message of peace by sharing our initiative in every possible way. Echoing the words of HG Wells, we too believe that 'Our True Nationality, Is Mankind'.
