On Valentine's Day The Body Shop Will Rise Against Gender Violence

By 21:37 ,

Save The Date: Now here's something you can do to make a difference on Valentine's Day - It's a flash mob with a cause! The Body Shop will  be part of the 'One Billion Rising Movement' on 14th February 2013, a global dance movement to stop violence against women.

ONE IN THREE WOMEN ON THE PLANET WILL BE RAPED OR BEATEN IN HER LIFETIME
ONE BILLION WOMEN VIOLATED IS AN ATROCITY
ONE BILLION WOMEN DANCING IS A REVOLUTION

Gender violence is not a new problem The Body Shop has fought against. In 2000 together with Women's Aid Organisation, The Body Shop launch a nationwide campaign called Stop Violence Against Women. This was followed by Sixteen days of Activism - Speak Out Campaign in 2004 and four year later, they continued with another campaign called Break the Silence on Domestic Violence. Most recently The Body Shop partnered with Soroptomist International in 2012 for their Walk the Talk campaign.

"Gender violence cuts across countries, cultures and races, affecting the rich and the poor, the educated and uneducated alike. We at The Body Shop employ many women both in the office and in the shops. We cannot emphasise enough the need for homes, the workplace and public streets and places to be safe places for all women." - Datin Mina Cheah Foong, Managing Director of The Body Shop who has always felt very strongly about the subject.

"By participating in the One Billion Rising movement, we hope to enable out staff and remind women from all walks of life that violence should not and will not be tolerated and that women are empowered to speak up and stand up against gender violence. As ever, The Body Shop is proud to be at the forefront of this fight, for as long as it takes," she adds.

The Body Shop has been awarded the Primes Minister's CSR award for their work in Empowerment of Women, a humbling yet satisfying testimony to The Body Shop's commitment to gender issues here in Malaysia.
